Panel De Pon Wiki

Panel de Pon 64 is a cancelled video game for the Nintendo 64. However, the game was released for the N64 as Pokémon Puzzle League, albeit it was rebranded and featured characters from the Pokémon anime and it was only game that did not release in Japan.

The game would later get a proper release when the game was included in Nintendo Puzzle Collection (NINTENDO パズルコレクション, Nintendo Puzzle Collection) for the Nintendo Gamecube which marks the second major release in the series.

The game features new gameplay modes, up to 4 players, an entirely new cast (Barring Thanatos and Cordelia), a new story, and much more. The game was released as part of the Nintendo Puzzle Collection along with Panel de Pon (GBA Multiboot), and ports of Dr Mario and Yoshi's Cookie. This game shares many features from Pokémon Puzzle League.

Development[]

In the Panel de Pon Hompage Interview when asked about a sequel, Hitoshi expressed interest in putting it on Nintendo 64 while also keeping the same visual style for the sequel and told Toshitaka to write a story about the events that take place after Lip became queen. [1] This meant that there's a new cast of characters in place of the classic cast. However the game went cancelled and like Panel de Pon GB, this game was also reskinned into a Pokémon skin in the form of Pokémon Puzzle League. In 2003, the game was ported to the Gamecube via Nintendo Puzzle Collection, albeit the 64 part of the logo and game name was removed.

Panel de Pon 64 Prototype[]

Build: Pre Beta / Version 79

Build Date: July 21st, 1999

On July 12th, 2020, Gamers Manuel had uploaded a video showcasing his video game pickups, it was bought from a pack off of Craigslist, which from a friend's dad used to work for Nintendo who gave him the prototype cart. Originally, Gamers Manuel was going to showcase the game in the video but he decided it will be its own video. A week later, on July 19th,2020, he uploaded a video about the prototype:

Differences from Nintendo Puzzle Collection version[]

  • Title screen has a placeholder of the Nintendo Screen from the Super Famicom version of Panel de Pon.
  • The song that plays in the title screen is a rendition of the Easy Mode Ending theme that would be later used in the Nintendo Puzzle Collection version of Panel de Pon.
  • Another difference is that the 2nd option in the first section of the menu only specifies a 2-player game.
  • The menu colors surrounding the font are only used for the outlines as the inside of the font is white instead of being completely colored like in the Nintendo Puzzle Collection version.
  • There are transition effects in the menu transition which was also seen in Pokémon Puzzle League.

-Moving on, then. If you were to create a Panel de Pon sequel, what would you do?
Hitoshi: Put it on the Nintendo 64, of course.
-You must get a lot of requests from fans.
Hitoshi: We get a lot of fan letters. A lot of our biggest fans seem to have gotten into the game because of the art. Lots of people saying things like “I tried it because the graphics were cute, but the game is actually really fun, too!” So, if we were to make a sequel, we would definitely want to keep the same visual style. You’d better get working on a story about what happens after Lip becomes queen, Toshitaka. (laughs)
